Good News About the Nuclear Accident in Japan

My good friend Jeremy Eaton sends along this good news for those of us worried about the nuclear accident in Japan. It's a long brief on an article written by Dr Josef Oehmen, a research scientist at MIT, in Boston. Dr. Oehmen is a PhD Scientist, whose father has extensive experience in Germany’s nuclear industry.

From Brave New Climate:

I am writing this text (Mar 12) to give you some peace of mind regarding some of the troubles in Japan, that is the safety of Japan’s nuclear reactors. Up front, the situation is serious, but under control. And this text is long! But you will know more about nuclear power plants after reading it than all journalists on this planet put together.
There was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity.
By “significant” I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on – say – a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

Whew! Great. I think I'll have that nightcap now!

Japan's nuclear safety agency said on Sunday there was no problem with the cooling process at Tohoku Electric Power Co's (9506.T) Onagawa nuclear power plant and that a rise in radiation levels there was due to radiation leakage at another plant in a neighbouring prefecture.

  2. Do you know much about the author of that post? It is being spammed around by a PR firm.

  3. Thanks James! I wouldn't doubt that for one second. I've been getting MANY MANY reports that conflict with it. Do you have any other good ones besides this: http://www.energybulletin.net/stories/2011-03-13/how-black-japanese-nuclear-swan

Comments must be succinct & relevant to the story. Comments are checked frequently and abusive, rude or profane comments will be deleted. I’m just one of many bloggers who answer questions online and sometimes for the press. I usually handle questions about Japan, marketing or the economy, so in those areas I’m more likely to make sense and less likely to say something really stupid. If I post something here that you find helpful or interesting, that’s wonderful. This is my personal blog. If you don't like what you have read here then, just like when you go into a restaurant or bar that allows smoking, if you don't like it, there's something at the front that has hinges on it and it is called a "door."
