Why My Child Doesn't Have ADD or ADHD or Any of These Medical Problems.

"He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything." - Chinese Proverb

My kid doesn't have these various diseases that plague US children (ADD & ADHD are not so prevalent in Japan nowadays). Why? My child eats healthy.

I firmly believe that American children suffer all sorts of ailments because of diet. Think about it, of course your kid is sick when he eats processed foods all the time. Of course he can't concentrate at school; his brain is fried with chemicals. Of course. There is no child who can function normally when eating junk all the time. Eating junk doesn't go through you, it becomes you.

Folks, a breakfast of Sugary cereals, a Pop-Tart and a glass of homogenized milk is NOT a healthy breakfast.

Everything is raw. Heavy raw veggie and fruits intake at every meal. Raw lettuce, carrots, strawberries, tomatoes, cashews, melons, oranges. My son eats this three times a day. He will also have a little bit of rice or bread once a day and some meat or fish. Never will he eat processed foods or fast food. (Read this! What timing! http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news%2Fhealth&id=8920784)

Health is important. Beef and meats are a luxury. If you're going to eat them, then eat the best quality grass fed beef. For Chicken? Buy chickens from real farms.

The best quality grass fed beef comes from New Zealand. USA beef is full of drugs and chemicals  (and bovine growth hormones) and I've bought Australian beef that was reprocessed. So we don't buy that anymore.

I used to coach children's basketball. I could see how the kid's mood and energy levels were different every time at practice. I'd ask them what they ate... It was then that I realized that there is a problem.

I know mom and dad are busy, but preparing raw foods three meals a day is cheaper and, actually, faster (cut a lot at once and use Tupperware)... Also you'll save money in the long run on medical bills.

Folks, your child's health (and yours) begins with what you eat.

Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food.- Hippocrates

The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease. - Thomas A Edison

* NOTE: We also don't have a TV so my child can focus on important things like reading and music and sports.... TV is brain damage and a huge waste of time - and that has zero to do with content. TV is a displacement of time. Time is the only non-renewable resource!

Gaijin Gourmet: The Best Salad Bar in Tokyo? - Sizzler in Setagaya

I think, by far, the best salad bar in Tokyo is the Sizzler in Setagaya on 246.

The restaurant is about 6 minutes walk from the west exit of Sakura Shnmachi station on the Denen-Toshi line about 12 minutes from Shibuya heading towards Kanagawa. The restaurant is open from 11 am until 11 pm seven days a week. Here is their webpage (sorry Japanese only!)

The salad bar there is fantastic. The place is extremely clean and kept quite nice. The food is always fresh (I've been there dozens and dozens of times).

The all you can eat lunch bar includes bread, soup, drink and dessert bar. Lunch all you can eat is ¥1980
Dinner all you can eat is ¥2380

It's the best salad bar deal I've ever seen in Tokyo. The food is good, I can relax, and the kids love the place. Everyone can find what they want at Sizzler in Setagaya.

Here, let me allow the photos to do the talking.

Outside view of building from 246 heading toward Shibuya. Beautiful newly reformed building. Parking for about 28 cars.

Quite spacious inside. This photo is about 1/4 of the entire restaurant so it seats a few hundred easily.

Large salad and fruits bar. Seriously, it's huge and the size of a salad bar you'd see in the United States.

About 21 different vegetables and organic tofu seen here.

12 different mixed salads here.... Seafood salad, Waldorf salad, others...

as well as apples, white and pink grapefruit sliced, bananas, orange slices, pineapple, peaches, as well as diced onions, shredded lettuce, olives, jalapenos, mixed cheese and salsa which is for...

...the burritos you can make. Taco meat and melted cheese for cheese nachos, gratin, spaghetti and curry rice are also available on the salad bar menu at no extra charge...

There is also soup bar that offers at least three types of soup daily

Of course, there are several styles of bread to choose from...

The drink bar offers everything you can think of....

And, of course, the kid's favorite, the dessert bar. Shoe-cream, coffee cake, chocolate mousse, apple strudel, three flavors of soft cream "ice cream" and chocolate and all sort of goodies that the kids like to sprinkle on top. Beware parents! The chocolate fountain pictured is only out on weekends and weeknights after 6 pm!

The address is:

Setagaya Sizzler
Sakura Shinmachi 1 - 33 - 5
Setagaya-ku, Tokyo

Tel: 03 - 3705 - 4919

東京都世田谷桜新町1−33−5

Take the west exit from Sakura Shinmachi station. Turn left down Sazai-san street. When you get to the police box turn right and go up the hill. It's a one-way street. Follow the road up and turn to your left at the end. Sizzler will be on your left. Can't miss it.

The Super Healthy Breakfast - Raw Food! Live Younger, Longer and Look and Feel Great!

The super healthy breakfast. This is what my son eats everyday! You should too! You'll lose weight, feel great and look years younger. I started eating raw over six years ago and I am never going back the the standard sick diet that everyone eats. I recommend the raw food diet for everyone. It’s also good for all sorts of ailments.

CLICK ON IMAGE FOR LARGER VIEW

Left: (raw) Grapefruit, strawberries, lettuce, cashews, blueberries, carrots, mini tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges slices, (lightly boiled) broccoli.

Right: Home made raw juice. Ingredients: Cabbage, broccoli and alfalfa sprouts, ginger root, asparagus, carrot, broccoli, Goya, pineapple, oranges, banana, milk.

Not pictured: One half English muffin and two slices bacon.

Note: I usually just have the juice - about one liter and one banana for breakfast. I do not eat the toast and bacon. I am slowly weaning my son off the cooked food. He is now about a 70% raw food eater. I am 95%.

OK, well, my hair is a disaster (as usual) but I'm 6 months short of 55-years-old in this photo. I know if I stay on the raw food, I can keep this for the next ten years. (Photo taken at 11:40 am Saturday Feb. 11, 2012)

Seriously, I recommend this for everyone. I used to have gout and high blood pressure. But I don't anymore. I wrote about that in Gout Sufferers of the World, Unite!

"... a raw food diet can cure and help alleviate the problems and pains of many diseases and ailments. So, I ordered the book, The Live Food Factor, and tried it. I went 70% raw for the first two months. I also got great tips from the Beating Gout web page.

I've stopped drinking alcohol and I now eat raw foods at least two meals a day. I also try to drink at least three quarts of fresh water every day. I found the advice in the book The Live Food Factor wonderful and I recommend it to you.

Even though I eat raw at least twice a day, I can tell you that I do feel great. I take no gout medicines and my cholesterol levels are completely normal too. I have also cut my blood pressure medicine dosage by two-thirds and plan on quitting altogether when I get the courage up to eat three raw meals a day.
It has been now seven months and I have had three blood tests that show that my uric acid is well within safe levels and I haven't had any trouble with gout at all. On top of that, I've lost 22 pounds in six months and feel great!"

Annette Larkins at 69 years old.

That was one and one-half years ago. Now I take no medicines and my blood pressure is an extremely healthy 120 / 74! I will never go back to the poison and junk like processed foods that so many people eat today.

And get this: Eating raw food costs nothing extra! There are no catches! It isn't a fancy diet! Raw Food? Eat all you want when you want!

Bizarre Japanese Stuff: "They Show This to High School Girls and Little Kids!?"

There's plenty of weird stuff going on over here in Japan, the land I love... But some of them are figments of people's quite twisted imaginations and others, well, others are the results of people's twisted imaginations.

But which are which? Let's look at two today:

Daily reader Brad from Pensacola, Florida writes;

"Mike! Hi. What the heck is going on over there? I saw this video and photo on a site from the UK called Obvious Winner and thought, "WTF!?" I wondered if the English translation was correct on the video or if someone is just trying to blow my mind. What about it? Are the vegetables really committing suicide and is this really a kid's cartoon? And that photo of the guy with his pants down, that can't be real, can it? That's Photoshopped, right?

Please let me know before I quit my job and move to Japan.

Love the blog..."

Thanks Brad... Well... I am sometimes surprised too at what goes on here and this is one of those times. I don't watch TV but this video definitely looks to be an authentic Japanese cartoon. The Japanese love curry (though Japanese curry is more like beef stew than Indian curry).

The part about killing themselves - though they only say something along the lines of sacrificing themselves for the good of the greater curry - is the part that makes me drop my jaw. Watch it

Pretty bizarre behavior for a bunch of vegetables... Cartoon or no cartoon! But, this is Japan, so let me explain... In old Samurai movies there was always someone who took the fall for the rest of the gang, so, actually this is not so much committing suicide for the curry... It is a parody of Samurai films.

Still, if you didn't have that knowledge, this would be pretty bizarre!

Now this next photo is definitely fake I'd say. This is more likely the figment of the imagination of some nerd living in a western country who has way too much time on their hands.

The girls walking in the background do not look surprised and they are not running away... So I'd have to say, "Photoshopped!"

Any Japan residents care to agree or disagree? Still, it's funny photo for a second or two.

Gaijin Gourmet: Best Place to Buy Fresh Vegetables and Fruit in Tokyo!

By Mike in Tokyo Rogers

I've found another fantastic place that I just must introduce. It is a fresh produce and fish shop near Okachimachi station in eastern Tokyo. The shop is called, "Sakana no Yakata." It is a chain store run by a company called Yoshiike.

Sakana no Yakata - Go out South exit of Okachimachi station. Turn left. 5 seconds walk.

Folks, I went to that store for the first time ever and I was totally floored by how fresh the produce was and how incredibly cheap the prices were. It is the closet thing to a real Farmer's Market that I have ever seen in Japan.

The shop was packed with people on a weekday. They had tons of items on sale. Some items, like strawberries, I haven't seen on sale in quite a while.

Other items, like fresh bananas with five bananas in a pack sold for ¥30 yen (35 cents) a pack! My local store, which is dirt cheap (or so I thought) sells them for almost three times that price!

Look for the huge cod

Go out Okachimachi South Exit #1 and look to the left. You'll see "Sakana no Yakata" (魚の館)on the corner. Here is a map.
