Sixteen Animated Views of Old Meiji Era Japan

This collection of extremely cool 3D stereo views of Meiji Japan was found at a site called Bezbridge. It is a collection of old images of Japan set up in animated stereo view. These are all moving gifs.

The site says:

In the late 19th and early 20th century, enigmatic photographer T. Enami (1859-1929) captured a number of 3D stereoviews depicting life in Meiji-period Japan.

This sounds interesting so I dug up some more information about T. Enami for you.

T. Nobukuni Enami

The formal portrait of Japanese Photographer T. Enami seen above was possibly taken in 1909 --- dated by the outdoor group portrait shown below that was published in association with it. If so, Enami would be about 50 years old, with 20 years of photographic activity still ahead of him.
The original silver prints of both of these images have been lost, and are reproduced here from halftone illustrations published in K. Ogawa's 1913 book SOGYO KINEN SANJU NEN SHI  [A Celebration of Thirty Years in the Photography Business] ---a commemorative book detailing the history of K. Ogawa's commercial photographic enterprises that, among other things, provided portraits of the photographers and associate members of the K. Ogawa Alumni Association.
This rare book was re-discovered in 1994 by professional photographer and photo-historian Torin Boyd. He was kind enough to send me copies of these halftone illustrations, which look just fine here...considering they are both  SCANS of a XEROX of HALFTONES made from a long lost PHOTOGRAPH !

Old Photos of Japan

By Mike in Tokyo Rogers

Are you interested in the mystique, magic and enigma of old Japan? I certainly am. I love things that represent old Japan: art, furniture, culture, bonsai and photography.

The photography of old Japan is usually the part that leaves me quite unsatisfied as, since Japan was such a poor country, and generally closed to the west for centuries, there aren't that many quality old photos representing Japan from the 1800's... Or so I thought!

Today, I'd like to introduce you to a wonderful web site that I stumbled upon yesterday called Old Photos of Japan. It is a fantastic cornucopia of photos from a bygone era that will keep you enthralled with the quality of the work and the artistic intention.

From the homepage:

OLD PHOTOS OF JAPAN:
shows photos of Japan between the 1860s and 1930s. In 1854, Japan opened its doors to the outside world for the first time in more than 200 years. It set in motion a truly astounding transformation. As fate would have it, photography had just been invented. As the old country vanished and a new one was born, daring photographers took photos. Discover what life was like with their rare and precious photographs of old Japan.

Old Photos of Japan includes work by some of the better known western photographers of the era like Adolfo Farsari and many many more that were completely new to me like Julian Cochrane's very early work from the turn of the century.

Old Photos of Japan is a wonderful online vacation and time trip back to a day long gone past. Please, when you have time, go click on the site and adventure. It might make us all long for a time when life wasn't so rush rush and in a hurry. Old Photos of Japan is a wonderful web site that is like a dream vacation online.
