China to Send Troops to North Korea

Well, what did I tell you? The United States and South Korea have been playing with fire and antagonizing North Korea and getting us very close to a war. From today, the idiots who run the Japanese government will start military exercises with the United States in the East China Sea.

I've written many times that these military maneuvers can lead to no good outcome.

One might remember that, even though North Korea was making very bellicose comments about the maneuvers, they suddenly seemed to back down and went silent.

Well, now we know. It seems that the Chinese and the North Koreans have outflanked the USA (and South Korea and Japan) once again.

It has now been reported that China and North Korea are discussing the deployment of Chinese troops in North Korea for the first time in over 20 years. The report from Press TV:

China and North Korea are reportedly discussing details of a plan allowing Chinese army forces to be deployed in the communist country for the first time in about two decades.
Citing an anonymous official at the presidential Blue House, the South Korean Chosun Ilbonewspaper reported on Saturday that the troops “would protect Chinese port facilities” in the Rason special economic zone near the Sea of Japan (East Sea).
“North Korea and China have discussed the issue of stationing a small number of Chinese troops to protect China-invested port facilities,” the unnamed official told the newspaper.
“The presence of Chinese troops is apparently to guard facilities and protect Chinese nationals,” the official added.

US imperialist military fools! Now, do you think you can be whacking the North Korean hornet's nest without getting very severely stung?

The USA must stop antagonizing North Korea!

USA out of Japan. USA out of South Korea. USA out of Asia.

Japan's Economists Have Lost Their Minds... Fortune Tellers Haven't...

Students of Austrian economics and those who realize that the current fiat-based money system built on debt and credit is now headed for the end game.

There is not much time left for people to protect their assets and families by divesting out of fiat currency based investments and into commodities and real assets like gold, silver, oil - and, possibly land. This is a well understood trend in the west (unless, of course you are a Keynesian economist or from the Chicago school).

The fast rising price of gold and silver over these last ten years are the proverbial canary in the coalmine. Gold and silver have stupendously outstripped stocks in performance over this time. In fact, silver increased in value over 85% in 2010 alone.

But now, some clowns in Japan are predicting a return to the bubble days of the late 1980's. In fact, they write as if the bubble is a good thing....

Japan Times reports:

Remember the bubble? In case you don't, Shukan Gendai (Dec. 20) reminds us that the economic bubble of the late 1980s was an era of rocketing salaries, stock prices and property values, yet accompanied by little inflation. Wealth was seen everywhere. Catching a cab downtown at night required flashing a ¥10,000 bribe at the driver just to get him to stop.

Over 20 years later, the bubble era seems like a wonderful, distant dream. However, 2011 could well be different. According to the weekly, Japan is now on the verge of a new economic bubble for the 21st century.
Some of the major economic indicators already are showing strong promise as we begin the new year. As this story was going to print, the stock markets were climbing, the dollar strengthening, and the price of gold, a favorite asset in bad times, falling.
That last sentence is a real laffer. Gold is falling? Oh really? 10 years ago, gold was $300 (USD) and ounce. Last time I looked (about 5 seconds ago) it was $1,361!
Sorry, but gold, like any other asset has up days and down days... Saying that the price of gold is falling because it has gone down a few percent over this last 10 days is hardly responsible reporting... Gold, as with any other asset, trends are not judged over a few days or weeks.
This writer, obviously not schooled in Austrian economics, doesn't understand cause and effect. The article continues:
On the home front, more money will flow into the equity markets, nudging stock prices higher. That would be thanks in part to a likely 5 percent cut in the corporate tax rate, leaving Japanese companies with more money to invest, Nobuyuki Fujimoto, an executive at Traders Securities Co., Ltd., tells the magazine.
As for the overseas factors, the U.S. Federal Reserve has already been playing the central role. Through its quantitative easing, the Fed is flooding the world with dollars. All that money has to go somewhere, and one favorite spot is Japan, thanks to its relative stability.
"Since the Lehman Shock, a huge amount of quantitative easing has been under way in order to restore the U.S. economy. The global economy is in a state of 'excessive money.' That money has been circulating, including flowing into Japan," says an executive at a major brokerage that the magazine does not identify.
The inflows are already happening, with foreign investors reportedly returning to Japan in search of decent returns after a long absence.
"Data tells us that from November, overseas investors suddenly started buying Japanese stocks. The world is paying attention to Japan's stock markets," the brokerage executive says.

Yes, the Central bankers are all printing money as fast as they can. That money has to go somewhere. Japan has benefitted from the Carry Trade all these years. But with US rates at zero too, the yen carry trade is no longer so attractive. The solution? Buy undervalued Japanese stocks and land. That's what the foeigners are doing.
Japan has benefitted because of bad situations in the USA and the Eurozone... But with Japanese debt surpassing 200% of GDP... This situation will probably end, in a crisis for Japan, this year... Then you'll see everyone run for the exits. (Here is a related article showing Japan's gross debt at 226% of GDP here and here is another article with data from the Wall Street Journal talking about the coming crash of the Japanese Yen.
Problem is that this fiat currency they are using is quickly losing it's value. What actually is happening is that the west is trying to export its inflation to Japan.
Hardly a good situation for the Japanese people.
But, then again, when you are so desperate for some good economic signs, even reading the stars becomes "data." The article continues:
Shukan Economist (Jan. 11), usually a buttoned-down, rational publication, begins its issue by turning to the Chinese zodiac as a guide for how Tokyo stocks will perform this year.
Its article is titled, "A good omen for Japanese stock prices through the zodiac's leaping year of the rabbit." Astrology portends a profitable year ahead, the magazine says. This is the year of the rabbit, after all, and rabbits like to jump. The magazine figures stock prices will jump as well. A data chart purports to show a strong correlation between the animals of the year since 1949 and the historical performance of the Tokyo Stock Market.
Well, perhaps using a fortune teller to predict the market is strange, but I'll be these fortune tellers were just as right or wrong as main stream economists and writers who failed to predict the 2008 market crash and wrote about how strong our market fundamentals were back than. Chuckle!
This bizarre idea that the bubble was a good thing and its return should be hailed as good news defies logic. Then the writer adds another weird comment that is another total head-scratcher:
Maybe it's too early to bring out the vintage champagne, gold-flake sake and other iconic treats of the late '80s. But after a couple of decades of economic stagnation, even modest signs of growth are worth getting excited about.
Sorry, but two decades of money printing and Japanese stimulus should show anyone that more money printing and stimulus are not the answer to our problems. They certainly do not mean the economy is improving.
If printing money and giving it away did improve the economy, then why would anyof us have to work? Why not just print and print and print and give it all away! We'll all be rich, right? The government can print to its heart's content to pay it bills, right? Wrong.
The bubble of the 80's were good times living on borrowed money. That's why is is called a "bubble" (a "bubble" means artificial growth)  When the bubble burst, the party ended. We've been paying for that party for the last 20 years.... Trust we are still going to be paying for it this year and for the foreseeable future...
Mr. Japan Times writer, if you think living in a bubble situation is good, and that this sort of fake economy means that the real economy is good, then I have a suggestion for you: You can live just like the bubble days! You have a credit card, right? What's to stop you from spending and spending like the 1980's today?... Nothing...
Well, nothing except that you will have to pay for those charges on your credit card and those excesses tomorrow. As it is with the individual, so it goes for the state.
Welcome to economics 101 and the real world.

Genius Blogs and Get's 100's of Volunteers, Lawyers & Web Designers in 5 Days!

I've written before that I look up to Mish Shedlock as an inspiration as to how to write and run a no-frills but incredibly interesting blog. I sincerely think that anyone who is interested in blogging needs to check out his site. I think, Mish's Global Economic Analysis is one of the best 3 sites on the Internet!

(Updates below)

Currently, Mish is running a campaign, looking for volunteers, and he's gotten 100's of them in only a few days! That's astounding!

Mish has been writing and blogging for years and he often updates his blog 3 times a day!  (I've done that, as a test, for 3 months straight in 2010 and let me tell you that that is a tough job!)

Mish does it consistently everyday and has been doing it for years. It is this kind of dedication that has built him a massive following. I bet he doesn't realize it, but he is an Internet marketing genius.

In a recent blog, Mish asked for volunteers to help him recall the governor of Illinois! No joke. Talk about taking on an almost impossible task!

Yeah, well, maybe almost impossible, but if anyone could pull this off, it is Mish Shedlock.

Mish is so dedicated and so well respected that when blogged about this campaign and asked for volunteers in only 5 short days he has gotten hundreds of volunteers. He has even gotten lawyers to volunteer!!! Now, that is amazing! I thought lawyers were cold-blooded sharks who only cared about cash in hand!

Last Sunday Mish wrote

I have exciting news this morning. I am launching a campaign to recall Illinois governor Pat Quinn.
This is not a frivolous effort. It is a serious undertaking and one in which I intend to see to the end. It will take hard work and lots of volunteers but we will be successful.

I need volunteers to ...
  • Gather signatures
  • Talk to state legislative representatives to get them on board
  • Provide legal help
  • Design a website
  • Help with advertising

I will pay for website hosting and domain names.

We need to be successful because Governor Quinn has plans that will destroy Illinois.
Will You Stand Up To The Injustice?

There are many tasks to be performed and I will need volunteers from every county to gather signatures. I estimate we need about 520,000 signatures. My goal is to get 700,000.

If you can volunteer, time, web design, advertising, legal help, or any kind of general assistance, I would appreciate it.

The campaign seems to me to be doing fabulously. Today Mish added:

I wrote the above call to action post on Sunday. Since then I have had over 100 volunteers including 10 web designers, a lawyer, and numerous business owners. Work on a website is underway. I have secured the appropriate domain names. One business owner who employs about 100 people graciously volunteered services of his legal department.

Like I said, Mish is an expert at this. Not only is he an economic genius, he is a wizard at using the new media to get his message out. The proof is in the pudding.

Of course, any good blogger needs good topics and Mish finds them all the time. This current campaign to recall the governor of Illinois is Mish's idea, but the absurd actions of the governor himself give a fertile mind like Mish's ton's of great ideas.

Get this: The governor of Illinois wants to raise personal income taxes 67%!

In Mish's own words; Tax insanity in Illinois is now official. Governor Pat Quinn signed off on a 67% hike in personal income taxes and a 46% hike in corporate taxes the moment the bill hit his desk.

Now Mish is working to recall the governor!

Unnamed Illinois businessman's reaction to Gov. Pat Quinn's
plan to raise personal income taxes by 67%
and corporate taxes by 46%

I know this is serious business but I couldn't help laughing at the extreme stupidity of the governor of Illinois. If you are from Illinois, or live there currently, you won't find this funny at all... If you are in another state or country and watching this insanity from afar, then this is spectacularly hilarious!

Mr. Governor, all I can say is that when the Japanese are laughing at you (unless you are a Hollywood stand-up comedian) then you have problems... Usually jokes don't translate well into other languages, but you are a joke that will be understood the world over!

Read Mish's take on this tax hike here.

Thank God there's people like Mish running around! Go get 'em Mish. See more on Mish's campaign here! Volunteer if you can!

Update 1: I wrote this blog 12 hours ago. In the meantime, Mish has now gotten over 200 volunteers!

Update 2: This message was sent to me by Mish himself:

Josei Jishin & Yahoo Japan! Web Collaboration Gets More Than 12 Million Unique Hits a Month!

There's not a woman in Japan over 18-years-old who has not heard of Josei Jishin. Josei Jishin is Japan's oldest TV, Movie, singer, Idol gossip magazine.

In 2009, Josei Jishin won the prestigious Fuji Sankei award for best magazine in Japan for the 4th time in that magazine's history! (By the way, Josei Jishin is not Fuji Sankei group). It's not only the oldest, it is by far the largest read women's magazine in the country. Josei Jishin started over 50 years ago (last year was the 50th anniversary) and the magazine sells over 400,000 issues a week.

But "only" 400,000 readers is not what Josei Jishin gets. The estimates are that every single weekly issue of Josei Jishin is read by well over 1.5 million Japanese women. You ask, "How is that possible?" Simple. Anywhere in Japan that there is a waiting room; beauty parlors, doctor's offices, banks, department stores and even coffee shops, you will see Josei Jishin there provided by that business as a service to customers.

I reckon the closest example in the United States would be Good Housekeeping magazine. Josei Jishin is the definitive Japanese women's magazine and totally dominates the market.

I often arrange promotional deals with international airlines (and domestic  airlines too) in a co-branding situation with local businesses and for foreign government tourism departments. I have arranged many deals in cooperation with Josei Jishin so I am well aware of what's going on at that magazine.

Since Josei Jishin is so well known and has been around for so long, in some circles, it has an image of being a low-class magazine for lower or middle class housewives. How far from the truth that is!

I have, in the past, heard some people at huge international companies say things like, "Josei Jishin!? We do not want to deal with that women's gossip magazine! We are a premium  high-class company! We want younger women clients and a magazine with a better image."

Actually, I heard this twice last year and could only chuckle. If only people knew the truth....

In spite of being the oldest women's magazine in Japan, and, in some - probably uninformed - circles, having a "dusty" image... Josei Jishin is bucking the magazine trend in this country and growing their business exponentially. Whereas other magazines are having a very hard time getting advertisers and then cutting their paper quality, staff, and magazine size or going bankrupt, Josei Jishin is cracking new ground and rolling in the money with their Internet businesses and online services.

The latest deal was with Yahoo Japan (as if only old women read Josei Jishin!? What does Yahoo Japan know that other companies don't?) Now, on Yahoo Japan, Josei Jishin has inked a deal to provide all the Japanese star and gossip material for Yahoo Japan. This means that when you see a juicy gossip piece about some famous star on Yahoo and you click the link, you are taken directly to the article on Josei Jishin's web page.

December 2010 access number's for this Yahoo Japan / Josei Jishin deal? Are you sitting down?

12,000,000 unique users in the first  month of operations! 12 million unique users a month!!! That is massive! I received this data yesterday along with my friend Tim Williams, the founder of Value Commerce (and one of Japan's top expert's on direct online sales and marketing) directly from the coordinator of the Josei Jishin and Yahoo Japan deal. The information was verified by telephone with Koji Tanabe, the chief editor of Josei Jishin, and one of my dearest, oldest and best friends.

One day in November of 2010, on the Josei Jishin site there was an exclusive video of a famous Japanese actress and her dog. That video received over 650,000 unique hits in one hour and crashed their server!

Josei Jishin co-promoted event. Notice all the old ladies in the background!

Only people who do not keep up with the Internet and business news doesn't know about this deal... Today, I'm telling you the inside numbers first.

Josei Jishin an old stodgy magazine for old women? Ha! 12 million women unique users on Yahoo Japan / Josei Jishin linked up page would tend to disagree.

While all other magazines are falling by the wayside, Josei Jishin finds a way to exponentially grow their Internet business with powerful partners. Maybe therein lies a good reason why it is the oldest and most read and most popular women's magazine in Japan.

It could also explain why they have survived and thrived for over 50 years.

You think Josei Jishin a magazine for old women? Ha! Think again! Unless you think 12,000,000 unique users per month on a collaboration with Yahoo Japan is a bunch of old spinsters sitting around on their Macbooks.... Somehow, I think not.

Zero-Hedge Shows Something VERY Scary is Going On with Silver!

Zero-Hedge has an explosive article and data today that show that US Mint silver sales for the first 2 weeks of 2011 have already combined to be more than 9 months of 2010. 2010 was already one of the record holders for silver sales.

Time is running out for you to protect yourself by buying silver.

Scary silver?

Zero Hedge reports:

Three days ago we noted that in just the first week of January, the US Mint had sold 2,221,000 ounces of silver "a number which if run-rated would be an absolutely all time monthly record," A quick glance at the tally today, shows that something very scary is going on. In the subsequent three days, the number has surged by 50% and has hit 3,407,000 ounces of silver! In just the first 12 days of the month we have already surpassed the total monthly sales of 9 separate months of 2010.
And some additional observations on what is becoming a physical buying frenzy from CoinNews.net:
An increase in 2010 Silver Proof Eagles and record-approaching 2011 Silver Bullion Eagles are the most interesting aspects in the latest US Mint sales report.

The Proof Eagle coins have seen two weekly adjustments since they sold out in late December. The latest brings them up 3,644 to 860,000, which would seem like a natural stopping point. Collectors will have to wait until the July time frame for the 2011 Silver Proof Eagles to make their appearance, according to the US Mint.

2011 bullion eagles launched  on January 3, 2011. Silver Eagles already have last year’s January record in their sight. The coins have raced to 3,407,000 in less than two weeks after their latest weekly pick-up of 1,322,000. Until January 2009, the silver coins had never topped the 3 million mark during the first month of a year. Those record sales totaling 3,592,500 may get clobbered in mere days. The all-time monthly high of 4,260,000 which was just set in November could be the next victim. As a side note, the 3,407,000 sold this month includes 469,500 of the 2010-dated issues. The US Mint had buyers order one 2010 Silver Eagle for every five of the 2011′s.

Bullion one-ounce 2011 Gold Eagles are running, but not sprinting like their silver counterparts. US Mint sales has their tally at 42,500 for a weekly increase of 29,000. As a comparison, buyers ordered 85,000 in January 2009. Inventory of the 2010-dated coins also remains. There were 53,000 at the start of the year. US Mint Authorized Purchasers must order one old for every four of the new ones.
Mike Krieger presents the following disturbing observation on this trend: "In the first 12 days of January 3.4 million silver eagles have been sold.  I have never seen anything like this.  The amount of physical being taken off the market on this paper sell off is EXTRAORDINARY.  We must be VERY close to the end." Whoever has adopted JPM's legacy paper silver short position is in for some very troubling days ahead.

Time is running out. Silver shortages are being reported at factories and dealers all over the world. Buy what you can, while you can. For more information, see here.

Japan to Hold Military Exercises w/ USA in East China Sea!!!??

The Ministry of Defense in Japan suddenly announced that the Japanese military and the USA will hold military exercises in the East China Sea four days from now on Monday 1/17/11. Now, you know that these things are planned way in advance so I believe this is a calculated ploy to further antagonize our Eastern neighbors.

These come just after China protested vehemently about US carriers in the seas between the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea along with US/South Korean live fire military drills in the Yellow Sea within sight of North Korea!

How wonderful! The Japanese navy once again has warships in the East China Sea for the first time since 1945. The Japanese military claim that the exercises are "West" of Kyushu, but  west of Kyushu is South Korea and the Yellow Sea....

You just know that these clowns are going to get as close to the Yellow Sea as possible... Heck, they'll probably send planes over the Yellow Sea "as a precaution."

I'm sure this is going to piss off the Chinese and the North Koreans mightily. Why doesn't Japan reinstate the Nishoka and start blaring "Banzai" out of the loudspeakers on the ships to get better cinematic effect.

Nishoka. I'm sure this holds fond memories for the Chinese and Koreans!

Why does the USA do this? Why do they antagonize people constantly? Why is Japan getting involved with this? What kind of an idiot in the Japanese government would approve of military maneuvers outside of Japanese territorial waters using Japan's supposed "Self-Defence Force"? Are we defending Japanese territory in other nation's territorial waters?

This is madness.

Just a few weeks ago North and South Korea seemed to have been on the brink of war. China was very upset that US warships were streaming along the East China Sea within sight of China. Then, after things cooled down a bit, North Korea asked for unconditional talks. What a relief!... Well, you'd think so, except South Korea rejected talks under any condition.

Gee, is someone pushing for war?

I won't go into how ballistic the USA would go if, say, Chinese ships sailed off San Diego within sight of US territory. Here's an excellent commentary about that by Eric Margolis here.

"West of Kyushu" is Korea. I'm sure the South Korean public finds this news enjoyable too!

But, after it seemed we dodged a bullet and avoided a war on the Korean peninsula, here's the USA ratcheting up tensions again and the idiot Japanese government is now getting involved. Talk about just plain stupidity and another huge drain on the economy.

On top of that, not one single English news Internet or print publication has reported this news. Japan Today and News on Japan along with Japan Times are useless. They are not doing their job.

I run a blog about marketing and I'm the first one to report this to the English speakers in Japan? Lame!

Global Research reports:

Tokyo: The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force will hold drills in the East China Sea involving U.S. warships on Monday, the Japanese Defense Ministry said.

The USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), a U.S. Navy Nimitz class supercarrier capable of carrying 90 fighter jets and helicopters, and U.S. destroyers will participate in the exercises, to be held to the west of the Kyushu island, the ministry said.

Japan's NHK TV channel has said the drills are aimed at deterring possible naval operations by North Korea and China.

Only two things I can say; This aggressive military posture is going to get us into a war that we do not need. And why isn't the English media in this country doing their job and reporting this crime?

We are being lead into disaster by militarists and a useless and docile media that no longer bothers to report what's going on.... Some stupid Japanese pop star marries an actor? Sure. Japan Today is all over that. Huge military drills off Korea and China? Yeah, we all gave up on Japan Times long ago... But, where is News on Japan or Japan Today now? Nowhere to be seen.

Hopeless.
