Wishing, Hoping and Believing

Wishing, hoping and believing. The three are close in definition. But there's a huge difference. I think people too often get them confused and use them interchangeably to their own disadvantage. I think it is best to know exactly what they mean. Words have meanings and using them incorrectly can cause a disadvantageous situation.

Wish is an intransitive verb. Merriam Webster defines "wish" as, "To have a desire for (as something unattainable)." Related words are, "crave," "hunger," "covet," "desire."

"Unattainable"? Well, that's no good. It looks to me here that "wish" is sort of a waste of time.

"Hope" is defined as, "To cherish as desire with anticipation," or "to desire with expectation of obtainment."  "Expectation of obtainment"? Well, that's a bit better.

How about believing? "Believe" is defined as "To have a firm religious faith" or "to accept something as true, genuine or real."

I think, often times, that wishing and hoping can be a waste of time... Wishing is fine for children... Hoping too... But hoping, for adults, can be an awful waste of time.... I often hear from people at work situations that they "hope" things get better... Folks, "Hope" is a terrible business plan.

Hoping that things get better at work is like being a leaf on the ocean being blown every which way. Is this your plan for your future and for your families well-being? Hope?

Belief....Believing, and only believing, is the only one of the three that can deliver your hearts desire. Believing, along with doing the necessary preparation in order to achieve your beliefs, is what must be done.

Think about when the Wright Brother's made their first airplane flight or the old story in the bible when Jesus walked on water. It was impossible for man to fly. Did the Wright Brothers fly because of hope or because of wishes? No. They flew, in spite of all, because they believed that they could and they made the preparations in order to do so.

I also believe that the story of Jesus walking on water is a parable. Everyone knows that it is impossible for man to walk on water (even if he is the son of god - you and I are the son, the children, of god.... Don't they say we are all god's children?) So, I think the story of Jesus walking on water is a representation that if you believe, really believe, then you can do the impossible. After walking on water Jesus said, "I told you. All you have to do is to believe."

Belief moves mountains.

Also, instead of always wanting more and always climbing that mountain towards success, you also need to stop and make base camp. One cannot simply climb and climb Mount Everest. They must stop along the way to daily create base camp to rest before they can continue the journey the next day. You must do the same. You need to stop and to take an assessment of what you have and to give thanks to your loved ones and to your god.

Here's what I do, and I do this religiously everyday; I write down in my notebook this, "Thank you god for all the truly wonderful things I have and all the truly wonderful things I am about to receive."

I do this because, instead of always wanting and wishing, and hoping, or desiring things, I want to give thanks for the great things I already have. If I can wake up everyday and know in my heart, really believe, that I am one of, if not thee, most fortunate people in the world, I will create a positive and happy existence for myself and my loved ones and all the people who I come in contact with.

I have another friend who has an ill partner. We met the other day and I related this story to him:

When my 1 1/2 year old daughter was diagnosed as having a rare, deadly childhood cancer, I was devastated. She was given a very low chance of survival. That particular type of cancer is extremely rare and, in Japan, about 2 or 3 kids get it a year... Most of them die within the first 6 months.

I sought out the help of a professional priest to help me and guide me with the battle I was about to enter alongside my daughter and my wife.

One day, at the beginning when I was especially distraught and worried, I told the priest,

"I have realized how to cure my daughter and have come to understand the way. All I need to do is to get the doctors and nurses to believe, to really believe, in their hearts, that she will recover and then she will. That's what I must do."

To that, the priest replied,

"Mike! It doesn't matter what they believe. All that matters is what you believe."

Those words! That moment! It was like the skies opened up and god reached his hand down to me.

Of course! It was all so simple! Why didn't I see it sooner? It only matters what I believe! My belief can move mountains!

From then on, I didn't wish nor want, nor hope, that my daughter would recover from this rare and terrible disease, I knew. I knew it without a doubt. I also prepared and did what was necessary for that outcome because I believed.

That was 16 years ago. My daughter is now a healthy, happy, beautiful high school student looking forward to college someday soon.

She is only the second child to have ever overcome that cancer in Japan's history. She won't be the last.

At 16-years-old

You can do this too. Anyone can. Like Jesus said, "All you need to do is to have faith."

From today, take account of all the good things you have. Be thankful for them. If you have a sorrow, then take account of that too and do what is necessary and what is required so that you can believe in a positive and good outcome.

The only things that can be borne out of fear and worry will be more of the same. Prepare and do what is necessary and believe in the positive outcome.

You can create your own reality. You can accomplish the impossible. And when you do, don't be surprised, you won't have been the first and you certainly won't be the last.

47 Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they all saw him and were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed.

For Wendy... You amazed us all (except daddy. I knew you could do it). Thanks for your love and inspiration.

Mother's Day... What Can Destroy a Mother? I've Seen it With My Own Eyes

This might seem a bit strange, but since next week Sunday is Mother's Day, I thought I'd write this is for a select group of very (un-)lucky mothers (and their children) that I've met before... Perhaps, by knowing this story before this Mother's Day, we will all be able to appreciate just how lucky we are and be just a tad bit more thankful for what we have.

I've been doing some things to help charities for children with incurable disease and children with cancer recently. I think, from these experiences, I keep getting a sad memory flashing back in my head and that flashback really bothers me. It's the memory of something that happened a few years ago. I'd like to tell you about it and, hopefully, with that, I can do something to get rid of these recurring thoughts in my mind.

Before that, some short background: My own daughter recovered from what was diagnosed as incurable cancer when she was a little girl. In spite of that, she recovered; but not fully. She is still wheelchair bound.

My lovely daughter

Nevertheless she is the happiest kid you could ever meet and just entered university one month ago. She loves it.

During the nearly two years she was in the hospital, I saw many kids and their families; many kids who didn't make it. Many kids who the doctors gave up on and sent them home to hospice to die in peace with their parents at their side. Because my daughter recovered I have always been eternally grateful.

How wonderful it is for children to be be accepted as "one of us" by their peers.
People probably don't realize how much of a treasure that really is!

After she recovered, I decided to pay back to God and society by volunteering every year. One thing I do is volunteer and dress up as Santa Claus and visit sick, some terminally, children at various Children's Hospital's in Japan every Christmas. (Please refer to: Santa Claus Visits Tokyo Hospital for Children With Incurable Diseases).

It was at one of these hospital's that I had the glimpse of the event that has bothered me greatly and will always bother me until the day I die, I suppose.

Here's what happened:

I was dressed up as Santa Claus and visiting a hospital in Tokyo that particular year. I had visited already a hundred or so children when I walked into the Intensive Care Ward. Upon visiting many kids there, I walked into a private room. There I saw a mother and her baby who looked to be about 2 months old or so. The baby was lying still on the bed and the mother standing on the other side, opposite the door.

The hardest part is to not cry in front of these wonderful children who have been struck with incredible bad luck and a terrible illness.

When I entered, with a "Ho ho ho!" The mother looked up to me and our eyes met. She looked straight into my eyes and I looked into hers. Time froze for a brief second. I had an epiphany. I had a revelation and manifestation of the essence of this woman's life flash before my eyes; not only was that her baby dying on the bed, it was part of almost her entire life dying on that bed.

She burst out into tears.

At that second, I could read her mind. This is what it told me....

All her life she was dreaming of becoming a wife and a mother. All her life she was dreaming and waiting for the man who would come along and sweep her away. All her life, since a tiny little girl, she was dreaming of having a child.

Since she was a little girl of 4 or 5 years old, she had that dear baby who was laying on the bed. She played with that baby, as a toy doll, when she was a small child. She had even named that baby when she, herself, was still just a little girl.

When she first met her future husband and fell in love, that baby was already born in her head. She saw the baby and visualized all the wonderful times they would all share.

The baby would be born and she would be so proud. Her parents and family would be so happy and thankful to god that this special child, this gift that she had been waiting for, planning for, all her life had arrived.

This darling baby that would be born and grow up into a little boy or girl and then go to school and play with the other kids; this child who would grow into an adult and then repeat the cycle and then mom would become a grandmother.

This child who would care for mom when she would become too old and frail to care for herself. This child who would be a reason for living...

But then, one day, soon after birth, the happy parents saw that something was wrong. Perhaps the child didn't react the way most children would. Or perhaps the child didn't seem to respond to cuddling or care....

It soon became apparent and, against all hope and prayers, at the hospital, this darling treasure would be diagnosed with an incurable illness.

That poor baby!

And that poor mother!

All those dreams dashed on the rocks: No first shoes; no kindergarten; no elementary school; no dentist appointments; no birthday parties; no family vacations; no family dinners; no high school; no first dates; no dances; no college; no marriage; no babies (grand children) being born; no intimate hugs and mom-to-child talks; none of these things.

Everything, all those dreams, gone.

When you stop to look at it this way, then you can see that this isn't just a baby on that bed, it is that dear woman's life...

She had dreamed of so many things and so many wonderful times together that mom and baby would share over the years....

One of the dreams was baby's first Christmas... And, of course, that first Christmas dream was celebrating at a warm home with loving parents and family and friends. Santa would visit at home and climb down the chimney for the little child. That's the way it is supposed to be.

It is a sort of real-life horror show if baby's first Christmas has Santa visiting in a white room in a cold hospital....

I wish and pray to God that I am not a part of any first Christmas for any baby and mom at any Hospital for Children with incurable diseases or terminal illnesses again. But, I know I will and I know that I must.

.........

Every time, after greeting all children at Christmas, when I say "Goodbye" I also tell them that, "Santa is coming to see you next year and I am coming to see you at your house so have cookies and milk ready!" Then I smile, say "Ho! Ho! Ho!" and wave goodbye. I pray and hope that this comes true... But, I suspect, in far too many cases, it does not...

Sigh...

If there is anything at all that I can try to do to bring even one minute of happiness to these people and children, I pray that God gives me the strength to help.

--------------

Recently, I found a new charity that I think is doing a wonderful job for children with cancer. It is called Shine On Kids. Shine On Kids have all sorts of wonderful support efforts for kids and their parents to remain strong and positive.

One of my favorite things they do is a dog named Bailey as part of their "Facility Dog" program. Bailey is the most wonderful and gentle dog you could ever hope to meet. Bailey goes to children's hospitals and gives children something to look forward to everyday.

Barney "speaks" to these kids.

Trust me, I speak from experience; the best and most powerful medicine for curing cancer is having a positive attitude and something to look forward to.

Happily Poisoning Your Dog and Giving Them Cancer

I just came back from the store and was so surprised at what I saw. They were selling "Sports drinks" for people's stupid mutts.

Sports drinks for dogs? You kiddin' me?

Probably the only thing stupider than those dogs are the idiot humans who voluntarily feed their animal these sorts of junk foods.

I'll make it simple: Humans are vegetable and fruits eaters. You can easily discern that fact by looking at our teeth. Dog on the other hand have canine teeth. Meaning they have evolved as flesh eaters... Not just any flesh; raw meat.

Your do needs to eat raw meat to stay healthy. They don't need a balanced diet; they don't need to eat vegetables and they certainly don't need to eat processed food packed with chemicals.

I've even heard of a company in Japan that make fermented bean crackers for dogs as a snack and idiot humans have some sort of weird idea that these things are healthy for dogs.

Wrong!

Yeah, look at how eager this dog is to tear into fermented soybean (Natto) chips! Down boy! Down!

You should try to cut down any and all vegetable and plant matter from your dog's diet as much as possible. That can of "meat by product fortified with 18 different vegetables and minerals is poison for your dog.

In "Processed Foods Cause Obesity and Cancer in Humans - Human Deaths From Cancer are on the Rise Since 1950 - Cats and Dogs Now Eat Processed Foods - Cats and Dogs Now Get Cancer….. Any Questions?" I wrote:

It isn't a coincidence that as more and more people eat processed foods that more and more people get cancer. Recently, more and more cats and dogs are getting various sicknesses and diseases like cancer.

More and more people feed their animals processed foods that are causing these illnesses. I think there is a pretty easy to figure causative correlation going on here, don't you think?

But don't believe what I wrote and linked to. Here's proof that plant material in your dog's diet is very bad for their health. From the Canine Cancer website:

What causes the mutations in the cancer genes? Each day of your dog's life all of the genes of each cell are subjected to a barrage of insults that have the potential to cause a mutation. Toxic chemicals can cause a mutation in DNA. One category of toxic chemicals comes from within the cell. These toxic chemicals are normal products of daily chemical activities within each cell.

For the most part, cells have developed mechanisms for detoxifying these waste products. However, some of these toxic waste products escape the protective mechanisms of the cell and attack the cell's DNA.

Another category of toxic chemicals are components of the normal diet. Every diet contains plant matter. All plants have developed various chemical mechanisms to evade being eaten by their natural predators: insects, bacteria, fungus and viruses.

The chemicals that are toxic to the natural predators of plants are also toxic to the living cells of your dog in many instances. Some of these naturally occurring chemicals can cause mutations in the DNA. A third category of toxic chemicals is the man-made chemicals. There is a long list of man-made chemicals that are known to cause mutations in the DNA of cells and result in cancer.

So there you have it. Little Scruffy may love eating potato chips and junk like Natto chips and "Pet Sweat" but it's poison and you shouldn't give it to them...

But, hell, why not, right? Most people feed their kids crap like Twinkies and chips and Coke, so if you give your child's body a "barrage of insults" why not let the dumb dog in on the fun, right? Wrong. Don't feed your dog plant based food and certainly don't give them anything but water (milk when they are little) to drink.

Otherwise you increase their risks of cancer... And you'll see that there's nothing more fun than a puppy with cancer. Cancer is a real barrel of laughs.

"It's Great to be Alive!" A message of positivity on a cold and rainy Tuesday morning

Today, it is cold and rainy here in Tokyo. Most people would say the weather is terrible. Not me. I like this weather. The rain makes the air smell so clean and fresh!

Yesterday, I met a young woman who had just defeated cancer and returned to work. She was beaming!

Even though she wore a cap to cover her head, probably because she had lost all her hair due to chemotherapy, she was so happy to be back at work. When I met her for the first time, she was incredibly enthusiastic, like a sixteen-year-old, and just so happy to be there.

I said to her,

"So, are you happy to be back?"

She replied, "Oh you don't know the least of it, Mr. Rogers. I am just so happy to be back here. Some of my friends said to me, 'Why do you want to go back to work?' But I am just so happy and thankful to be here. What I went through was a massive shock."

I smiled at her and said, "Oh, I know exactly what you mean. It is wonderful just to wake up every morning and see the sun or the rain. It is wonderful just to be able to walk the streets and go about your business. Just being here is so wonderful."

"Oh? She replied, "You've had health problems too, Mr. Rogers?"

I smiled.

"People just don't know how well they have it. There are people who say they are afraid of dying but they get bored and don't know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon."

We both laughed. I continued,

"It's wonderful to just be here and to be wanted and to have a job and health. More people need to realize that."

"That's absolutely correct. Just being here is an incredible gift!" She replied.

Since she had cancer and the scare of her life and a brush with death, I know, because of that, she knows exactly what I mean. She knows I know, too. There is a sort of brotherhood to people who have this sort of shared experience.

Sometimes I meet people who tell me that they work constantly and never have the time to spend with their families. I think that is sad. Of course work is important, but don't lose sight of why you work.

It's wonderful to be alive today. Don't you think so?

Tell your family that you love them and, when you walk out the door, smell the fresh air and see something new. Be positive. It is great to be here.

Positive Thinking: The Story of A Guy Who Defeated 4th Stage Cancer - Two Sides of the Positive/Negative Thinking Coin

Work is going terrible? Things look bad?

You think you have it bad now? Seriously?

Let me tell you about my friend Paul (not his real name) and how his life and death are a good lesson for us all.

Paul was a very popular and well known guy. You might say he was famous. At least in the music business in Japan, everyone knew him. Everyone in the world who knows a very famous late 80s ~ early 90s Japanese all-girl punk band  knows his work. Paul lived a fun and full fast life; fast foods, late nights, drinking and other recreational activities. Besides that, Paul was a heavy cigarette smoker for years.

One day, out of the blue, Paul had a sore throat. The sore throat didn't go away after a few weeks so Paul went to the doctor again. There, he was diagnosed with forth stage cancer of the throat.

The forth stage of cancer is, as you may know, the worst and final stages of the disease. Forth stage usually means that the cancer has penetrated the lymph system of the human body. The chances of survival are less than 5%... Suddenly, with all these things going on you'd think that Paul would get very depressed.

Well, he did. Like most people, Paul got very depressed.

Soon, his condition got worse. It got a lot worse. Of course it did. It had to with an attitude like that.

Then, one day, while he was at work, we met and had a nice long talk. This was after I helped my own daughter defeat forth stage cancer. Paul believed that I could tell him why some people defeat cancer and why some people don't.

Paul was a difficult discussion. Paul was a like a "sponge." Unconsciously, he was sucking the life and energy out of everyone he came into contact with. I could feel it. He was in a near panic that he felt he was going to die soon. Paul was grasping, searching for me, for anyone, to tell him some sort of knowledge, some sort of epiphany, some sort of magic that would make it all go away. He wanted some sort of "key" to wisdom that would answer his questions and make him healthy again.

I told him that the knowledge I have he already knows too. I told him that he already knew what had to be done, he just hadn't realized that it was there, right in front of him, the entire time.

Paul told me that whenever he went to the doctor's office (of course it was the doctor for cancer so all the patient's there were cancer patients) he would enter the waiting room. In the waiting room everyone would be looking down. Whenever a new patient entered the room, they look up look nervously at the faces of the other patients. Everyone, he said, would be reading each other's faces and body language to try to determine who was the next one to die and who would survive.

They were all sponges taking the life energy out of each other. It was like death row at a prison.

I asked Paul to stop this behavior immediately. I asked him to stop being a sponge. I asked him to stop absorbing the light from other people and, instead, start projecting the light. I told him that, instead of entering the doctors waiting room, nervously, like the others, enter bringing hope for everyone else. Smile and be positive. Show the others that you (Paul) are going to be one that survives. Show them the way that they can survive and, not only survive, how to thrive.

I hate to sound corny, but John Lennon had it right; "And in the end, the love you get is equal to the love you give."

I told him to stop taking energy from others and, instead, to start giving out positive energy.

Paul also told me that he knew that if he could just convince the doctors and the nurses that he was going to recover that he would recover. I told him that he was wrong. I told him that he didn't need to convince the doctors and the nurses; he only needed to convince himself.

I believe that ancient books, like the bible, are filled with wonderful stories that are not necessary to be taken literally, but to be understood figuratively. In the bible, when Jesus walked on water, we know that it is literally impossible to walk on water. But we know that people can do the "impossible." I think Jesus walking on water means that he accomplished what people thought was impossible... Perhaps like the Wright Brothers making a flying machine. In the bible, Jesus said, "All you need to do is to have faith."

I told Paul that it wasn't necessary for the doctors and nurses and his wife and children to believe that he was going to be cured. It was only necessary that he believed that he was going to be cured.

I told him to take the 5 tips towards winning that I mentioned yesterday. I told him that he needed to do that because he needed to train his mind to be positive for the rest of his life. He promised me he would. He did. He did it religiously, he told me. I also told him that,

"When you recover, you must remember to wake up everyday and continue with these steps to prevent the cancer from returning." This is obvious as a cancer is a physiological disorder and a positive mental attitude is necessary to stop it or keep it at bay.

Paul took my advice to heart. He started becoming positive again. He started going to the doctors office and, when the door opened and he entered, he was light a bright shining star bringing happiness and positivity to the other patients. He greeted everyone with a smile. He started creating in his heart the image and the belief that he was positive and that he was a good force and that he was actually, through his positivity and his actions, healing himself and helping others to heal.

Soon, Paul's cancer shrank and fell back into remission. He was ecstatic. His doctor was extremely pleased.

The next time I met him he was a changed man. I couldn't believe how much he thanked me. But he needn't thank me. I told him nothing that he didn't already know: That faith and positive thinking and beliefs can move mountains.

But, alas, this story doesn't have a happy ending. But it does have an important lesson for everyone: Several months later, upon being given a clean bill of health, and being told that the cancer was in complete remission by the doctors, Paul returned to work and his normal lifestyle, Paul began to live as he did before...

One day, after work, when riding his motorcycle home, he was hit at an intersection by a car and the accident severely broke his hipbone in several places. Paul had to return to the hospital where he languished. He was mentally shattered by this accident.

I believe that Paul was so disappointed by this accident and the fact that he had to return to the hospital bed for a few months that he fell into deep depression.

I spoke to Paul again, briefly on the phone, and he was a defeated man. He was crushed to be back into the hospital. Soon after, I'm sure to nobody's surprise, the cancer returned. Paul would die from complications from the cancer and the treatment soon after.

Like I said, there seems to be an important lesson here. When Paul became positive, he healed himself. When he became depressed, he got sick. Could the quickness of this change and how the illness returned show anything but the importance of a positive mental attitude?

A positive mental attitude is not something that you can just turn on and off like a light switch. It must be grown and it must be cultivated.

A beautiful garden of flowers and roses does not appear overnight. It takes months of doing groundwork, shoveling, spading, planting, watering and nurturing.

Are you doing enough to nurture your soul and your positive attitude? Are you doing enough so that you can become a beacon of light?

Processed Foods Cause Obesity and Cancer in Humans - Human Deaths From Cancer are on the Rise Since 1950 - Cats and Dogs Now Eat Processed Foods - Cats and Dogs Now Get Cancer….. Any Questions?

The other day a good friend told me about another acquaintance whose daughter had just passed away last Tuesday from a ten-month battle with cancer. Poor little girl. She was only eight-years-old... I have experience with dealing with childhood cancer so I can understand somewhat their suffering. May god rest her soul and comfort the parents.

......

This morning I went to the grocery store. I walked by the racks that have the processed poisons (er, I mean processed foods). I never buy that stuff. We picked up our veggies and fruits and then went to the check out counter. There, I noticed that, "Gee! The shelves where the processed human foods are sure do look a lot like the shelves where the processed cat and dog foods are. In fact, they look exactly alike!"

If you don't pay attention closely, you might be eating your cat's dinner... It might even be healthier!

The increase in cancer deaths (even with the massive decrease in smoking cigarettes) can be attributed to many things. Some things may be difficult for us to control like the air we breathe or the location of factories from our homes.

It is easy, though, to control what we put into our bodies.

Human food. We know this isn't healthy.

It is common knowledge that processed foods cause obesity and cancer in humans (as well as many other maladies)

Seriously. It's in a can or packaged at a factory, is there any question that it has all sorts of chemical goodies in it?

The diet of people in the west (Japan too) have continually been on a course of more convenience. This makes a situation whereby the consumption of processed foods increase as the years go by.

Question 1: Do you think the chemicals in processed foods are safe? Do you think that chemicals can cause diseases like cancer? If so, don't you think it is a good idea to eliminate these chemicals in your diet or at least cut them down greatly wherever you can?

Question 2: Do you think you should you be feeding yourself or your child processed foods?

My son's typical breakfast: Raw veggies and fruits: carrots, cucumbers, lettuce, cashew nuts, tomatoes, orange slices, melon slices (and two boiled broccoli). Add to this homemade raw veggie & fruit juice and 1/2 slice bread and one small sausage. Glass of bottled water. We never give him processed foods for any meal! My breakfast is all these fruits and veggies blended into juice!

Get healthy and protect your health now because the government is going bankrupt and they aren't going to be able to pay for your medical bills one day in the very near future; whether that is Japan, the United States or any of the  European nations with their massive debts. Who is going to pay for your medical bills when the government can't? Hint: Look in the mirror (it's you!)

Getting rid of all the processed foods and poisons we eat and drink is not a 100% sure-fire way to prevent cancer and diseases, but it is a pretty strong shield. And, I mean, in this day and age, why not make the best effort to cut down these poisons coming into our body? In many ways, we cannot control pollutants in the environment and where we live, but we can make a better effort to protect our bodies and our children.

It's a pretty simple equation, I think. You can do your best to eat right now or pay the price later. Your choice.

Note: My dear friend, Timo Budo wrote, "Hey buddy, I read yer rant about processed franken-food. In my case you're preachin' to the friggin' choir. You seen the flick "Forks Over Knives" ?" Here's the trailer:
